Let Them Eat Cake
‘The liaisons were dangerous. The wigs were lethal.’ And the whole thing was seriously unfunny – though there’s something almost bathetic about the reference to Dangerous Liaisons, and surely the creators must have seen Ridicule.
Jennifer Saunders has form for unfunny comedies: French and Saunders and Absolutely Fabulous good at first but were run into the ground – if not beyond – and subsequently the BBC has indulged her with a succession of further non-comedic vehicles such as Mirrorball, The Vivienne Vyle Show, Jam and Jerusalem and this piece of dross.

The Comtesse de Vache can rarely be said to be at her best but when she removes her wig …

The makeup
Lynda Armstrong was the makeup designer; Suzanne Stokes-Munton was the hair and wig designer.
