‘The liaisons were dangerous. The wigs were lethal.’ And the whole thing was seriously unfunny – though there’s something almost bathetic about the reference to Dangerous Liaisons, and surely the creators must have seen Ridicule.
Jennifer Saunders has form for unfunny comedies: French and Saunders and Absolutely Fabulous good at first but were run into the ground – if not beyond – and subsequently the BBC has indulged her with a succession of further non-comedic vehicles such as Mirrorball, The Vivienne Vyle Show, Jam and Jerusalem and this piece of dross.
Whatever, in 1782 and one of the most hated, despised and loathed women in all of France Columbine, the Comtesse de Vache, (Jennifer Saunders) skulks around the palace of Versailles locked in a vicious game of one-upmanship with her bitter rival Madame De Plonge, including trying to outdo her with outrageous wigs and clothing.
The Comtesse de Vache can rarely be said to be at her best but when she removes her wig …
