The Hôtel Lambert, located in the very heart of Paris on Ile Saint-Louis – the magical island known as the pearl of Paris – is renowned as one of the most beautiful private residences in the city.

The house was built and decorated in the early 1640s by the giants of arts and architecture who were the masterminds behind Versailles, Louis Le Vau, Charles Le Brun, and Eustache Le Sueur. It was listed as a historical monument in 1862 and has long been regarded as a jewel in Paris’ crown. Once home to Voltaire and the Rothschilds, host to Chopin and Delacroix, Princess Grace of Monaco and Elizabeth Taylor, its rich history dates back centuries.

More recently, following a landmark restoration, its intricately decorated walls and gilded ceilings have housed one of the finest private collections of decorative arts ever assembled.

Acquired to furnish the Hôtel Lambert, works were chosen with a particular emphasis on provenance, craftsmanship, academic significance and relevance to the heritage of the house. The selection to be offered at Sotheby’s spans a multitude of categories with exquisite examples of French furniture, including fine examples by André-Charles Boulle, and objects of vertu, including rock-crystal works of art, limoges enamels, precious silver-gilt, antique jewels and Kunstkammer objects.

Some 1,300 lots   will be offered in a series of auctions at Sotheby’s, starting in Paris this autumn. Prior to the sales, the public in Paris, London, Hong Kong and New York will be able to experience the magnificence of the interiors of the Hôtel Lambert for the first time, in a series of specially-created immersive digital spaces in Sotheby’s galleries.

The collection boasts objects with illustrious history from the 17th to the 20th centuries; from princes and kings and their consorts, including Madame de Pompadour, Madame du Barry and Queen Marie-Antoinette, to aristocrats and celebrated collectors of the 18th and 19th-century, through to aesthetes of the modern day, such as Hubert de Givenchy, Karl Lagerfeld, Baron de Redé, Count Stroganoff, Richard Wallace, Maria Sert and Antenor Patiño.

The Hôtel Lambert was built in the early 1640s and designed by one of King Louis XIV's favourite architects, Louis Le Vau, for the financier Jean-Baptiste Lambert. Testament to its grandeur, the house featured a gallery by Charles Le Brun, painter of the ceilings of the vaunted Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.

This marked the beginning of a long history of distinguished ownership and impeccable taste. In the 1740s, the Marquise du Châtelet and Voltaire, her lover, used the Hôtel Lambert as their Paris residence, hosting there and launching a famed political salon.

Later, the hôtel particulier was bought by the Polish Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, which drew in some of the most notable names in Polish culture, not least the writers George Sand and Honoré de Balzac, and the artist Eugène Delacroix.
Chopin was often a guest, and indeed once wrote a letter saying that it was the place he most preferred to play; his famous “La Polonaise” was composed exclusively for the Polish ball held annually at the Hôtel Lambert.

In 1975, Guy and Marie-Hélène Rothschild took residence at the mansion, continuing the tradition of hosting international high society and luminaries from the worlds of art and business.

The Hôtel Lambert was acquired in 2007 and underwent a complete and sympathetic restoration supervised by His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Abdullah Al Thani and his immediate family, returning this historic building to its former glory. Alongside the restoration, the Hôtel Lambert was furnished with exceptional furniture, objects and decorative arts, complementing the building’s historical stature and importance.
The creation of the interiors was realised through a collaboration with world-renowned interior designer Alberto Pinto, who in many rooms followed in the sumptuous style originally envisaged and conceived by Renzo Mongiardino, hailed by many as the greatest designer of the twentieth century.

The splendour of the restored spaces and the works of art that adorned them have rarely been seen outside of private circles. Now, as ownership of the Hôtel Lambert transfers once more, they are set to be revealed.

Proceeds from the sale will support The Al Thani Collection Foundation, a non-profit organisation whose core mission is to advance and promote art and culture. This objective is principally delivered through public art initiatives including sponsorships, museum projects, the staging of exhibitions, an international loans programme and academic publications ⁠–⁠ honouring artistic achievement across a rich diversity of cultures.

Reconnaissez-vous le " petit objet Marie-Antoinette ", planqué dans ces décors ?

Voici un court extrait de l'article publié cette semaine dans le Figaro qui résume l'actualité récente de cet hôtel particulier et de la collection de son précédent propriétaire (celle qui sera donc vendue aux enchères) :

Sotheby's emporte la vente du contenu de l'hôtel Lambert, dernier écrin parisien de la famille Al Thani

Ce sera l'événement de la rentrée en octobre, chez Sotheby's, Galerie Charpentier, à Paris. Témoin du goût raffiné du Cheikh Hamad Bin Abdullah al-Thani, cet ensemble historique, avec de nobles provenances, pourrait être estimé autour de 100 millions d'euros, pour quelque 1300 lots des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles.



Le marché de l'art s'y attendait, sans savoir quand la nouvelle allait tomber. Depuis que l'hôtel Lambert, propriété de la famille royale du Qatar, a été cédé, en février 2022, à l'entrepreneur français Xavier Niel, tout portait à croire que son contenu finirait, tôt ou tard, dans une prestigieuse maison de ventes aux enchères. Et plutôt à Paris, là où le Cheikh Hamad Bin Abdullah al-Thani a inauguré à l'automne 2021 l'Hôtel de la Marine, en dévoilant une partie des trésors de sa pléthorique collection sur toutes les civilisations.

C'est Sotheby's qui a décroché la vente de ce pactole, quelques mois à peine, après le rachat de l'hôtel de l'île Saint-Louis par le fondateur du groupe télécoms Iliad (Free), pour un prix record, dit-on, de près de 200 millions d'euros.

Amoureux du mobilier XVIIIe, cet érudit à la culture universelle s’est constitué une fabuleuse collection de près de 6000 objets, explorant toutes les civilisations.

Le cheikh Hamad Bin Abdullah al-Thani, 40 ans, est l’un des plus importants amateurs d’art de son époque. Totalement investi dans sa collection, ce cousin de l’émir du Qatar est loin des stéréotypes des nouvelles fortunes du Golfe.

Érudit, curieux, voyageur comme ceux qui entreprirent le «Grand tour» au XVIIIe siècle, il a baigné dans la culture dès son plus jeune âge, grâce à sa mère qui lui a fait découvrir le Musée du Louvre et les châteaux français. De là, lui est venu son goût pour les fastes de ce siècle dont témoigne la commode Riesener acquise 1,2 million de dollars, en 2019, chez Christie’s, dans la succession du milliardaire canadien Paul Desmarais. Grâce au don de sa Fondation Collection Al Thani, ce meuble royal a retrouvé sa place dans la chambre de Pierre-Elisabeth de Fontanieu à l’Hôtel de la Marine. Et lui a ouvert les portes de ce lieu magique pour y exposer ses trésors.

Quelques informations complémentaires concernant, non pas le précédent propriétaire qui vend le contenu qui meublait et décorait l'hôtel particulier (voir mon message ci-dessus), mais bien sur celui qui serait le nouveau propriétaire du célèbre hôtel particulier...

Immobilier : à Paris, Xavier Niel rachète l’hôtel Lambert pour près de 200 millions d’euros

Xavier Niel a ainsi acquis la propriété privée la plus chère du parc immobilier parisien. Celle-ci pourrait devenir une fondation culturelle.

(...) Sur l’île Saint-Louis, dans le 4e arrondissement de Paris, se dresse un édifice prestigieux. Il s’agit de l’hôtel Lambert. Et ce dernier va changer de propriétaire.
Alors qu’il appartenait à la famille royale du Qatar depuis 2007, cet hôtel particulier construit au milieu du 17e siècle par l’architecte Louis le Vau a été acquis par Xavier Niel, selon Bloomberg. Le nouveau maître des lieux n’envisagerait pas d’en faire sa résidence principale. La superficie de 3.900 m² pourrait accueillir une fondation culturelle.
Contacté par nos confrères du Figaro, Xavier Niel, qui n’était pas disponible, n’a pas pu confirmer cette transaction.    

Et quelle transaction. Parce que s’il l’a réellement acquise, encore faut-il savoir à quel prix. Selon Forbes, il aurait déboursé environ 200 millions d’euros (226 millions de dollars) *.
Cela revient à un prix du mètre carré de de 51.000 euros le mètre carré . Soit près de quatre fois le prix médian du 4e arrondissement de Paris, qui est estimé aux alentours de 14.000 euros le mètre carré.   



Notre homme a les moyens, pas de souci ! La fortune du fondateur de Free était estimée, l'année dernière, à près de 7,3 milliards d'euros (source : Forbes).

Il va donc rester dans son palais rose de la rue d'Andigné, une ancienne dépendance du château de la Muette bâtie pour les Rothschild, et acquis en 2016 pour 31 millions :

Ou bien dans l'hôtel de Miramion, 47 quai de la Tournelle (5ème), ancien Musée de l'Assistance publique, dont il serait également le propriétaire. Pas si loin de l'hôtel Lambert.
L'hôtel de Miramion a été vendu en 2012 par l'Assistance publique - Hôpitaux de Paris afin de dégager des ressources financières pour investir dans la modernisation des hôpitaux.

Sympa le coin...

N'oubliez pas d'inscrire sur vos agendas les dates de LA vente aux enchères de la rentrée (de l'année, de la décennie, du siècle ?) !  
Ce sont près de 1300 qui passeront sous le feu des enchères : il y en aura pour tous les goûts, mais sans doute pas pour toutes les bourses.

Je sens que quelques records vont tomber ! Les millionaires ne connaissent pas la crise, bien au contraire, ils continuent de s'enrichir...

L'un des exemplaires en collection privée de la fameuse pendule musicale et automate dite (à tort) de Marie-Antoinette. Je pense qu'il s'agit de cet exemplaire ci, vendu aux enchères en 2007.

A confirmer avec le descriptif à venir...

Rappelons que nous connaissons à ce jour cinq exemplaires au modèle, dont trois étaient conservés dans des musées jusqu'à ce que soit vendue, en 2019, la version originale acquise durant l'été 1784 par Marc-Antoine Thierry de Ville d’Avray pour le service du roi.

Faut-il avoir besoin d'argent pour vendre de telles beautés... il faut dire que Al Thani a dépensé beaucoup d'argent pour Dudley House où il a emménagé l'année dernière (d'où la vente de l'hôtel Lambert et de ses collections).

De rien mes amis.

Les lots actuellement exposés chez Sotheby's (jusqu'au 10 septembre) ne sont qu'une "sélection" de "chefs d'oeuvre". C'est une sorte de "teaser", pas la totalité des 1300 lots.

Je ne comprends pas pourquoi les candélabres "réputés commande royale de Marie-Antoinette" ne figurent pas dans cette sélection?...

impossible d'approcher de tels objets, je me contenterai de dépenser, certainement fort cher, le catalogue pour rêver et s'instruire

Hôtel Lambert is one of the most prestigious 17th-century residences in Paris. It is important for the quality of its location, its architecture and its decoration. Located on the tip of Île Saint-Louis it opens onto the Seine. It was initially built for Jean-Baptiste Lambert and completed for his brother Nicolas Lambert de Thorigny in 1648 while Louis XIV was still an adolescent.


Jean-Baptiste Lambert called upon a young architect, Louis Le Vau, to design the hotel and come up with an innovative floorplan. It is thought that the garden was designed by a young André Le Nôtre, and indeed that it was one of his first projects. The decoration was designed by the painter Eustache Le Sueur. He was succeeded by Charles Le Brun, freshly back from Rome, who conceived and executed all the décors of the Hercules Gallery.
Thus Hôtel Lambert features work by the three great artists – albeit at a young age – who left their mark on the Louis XIV period, since he went on to entrust them with the project of the Château de Versailles.

Optical Illusions

Commissioned by Jean-Baptiste Lambert (1607-1644), Seigneur of Sucy and Thorigny, advisor and secretary to the king, the mansion that bears his name rose from the ground in the mid-17th century, as if fully formed and complete with the network of buildings and arched bays with which we are familiar. It was previously an area of grazing land through which the river flowed where the Rue Le Regrattier now runs.
The Ile aux vaches (Cow island) was the focus of one of the capital’s first real estate development schemes, which were encouraged by the authorities following the success of the Place des Vosges development completed in 1612, and then known as the Place Royale.

D'après mes informations et de source sûre, Hamad Al Thani a vendu "en bloc" les plus grosses pièces de sa collection en direct à un gros collectionneur américain, notamment le fameux secrétaire Weisweiler qui se trouvait dans le bureau du roi le 6 octobre :

L'hôtel de la marine qui devait accueillir les pièces les plus importantes de la fameuse collection Al Thani va maintenant se retrouver quelque peu... démuni.

Car les illustrations ci-dessus montrent un hôtel particulier plein à craquer, et nous retrouvons les différents meubles et objets présentés aux enchères. 1300 lots en tout, je le rappelle.

La Collection Al Thani est réputée rassembler plus de 6000 oeuvres de l'Antiquité à nos jours. Je suis sûr qu'il en restera donc bien assez pour les expos temporaires ou la décoration de l'hôtel de la Marine...

J'ai déjà commencé à distribuer ici ou là dans nos sujets quelques-uns des lots qui seront présentés à l'occasion de ces ventes aux enchères de l'hôtel Lambert.
Il va y avoir du boulot...

Volume II : Kunstkammer


Kunstkammer is dedicated to the princely spirit of aristocracy and the patrons of the Renaissance, with an exquisite selection of rock crystal, enamels and impressive German silver-gilt objects.


Displayed at the Hôtel Lambert in the Salon des Emaux and in the Salon des Curiosités, these sumptuous objects are a reflection of the tradition of the Kunstkammer, where certain materials and precious objects were associated with a philosophical reflection on Humanity and the Earth. Limoges painted enamel dishes and plaques made by the most famous artists of the 16th and 17th centuries – including Colin Nouailher, Leonard Limousin and Pierre Reymond and their workshops – will be presented alongside finely crafted silver-gilt tankards, covered cups, nefs, ostrich eggs and vessels, and a number of unexpected, unique objects such as a fantastic Flemish owl from the mid-17th century.


At the heart of the collection is a group of silver-gilt mounted rock crystal vases and tazzas, which pay tribute to the renowned collection assembled by Cardinal Mazarin and King Louis XIV, now held at the musée du Louvre and in the Prado.

Since the 17th century, the Hôtel Lambert has always been at the heart of French culture and the uniquely Parisian style of entertaining. A glittering set of former residents, Emilie Marquess du Châtelet, the Princes Czartoryski family, the Baron de Rédé, the Rothschilds and His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani and his immediate family held legendary parties attended by a heady guestlist of impressive and distinguished diners.


Volume IV, Les Arts de la table will present an outstanding selection of silver mainly French and English from the most famous silversmiths (Paul de Lamerie, Robert-Joseph Auguste, Paul Crespin, Duguay, Imlin, etc…), porcelain and glass that reflects this high art of hosting and dining.

Volume V : L’Écrin


Whilst the various private owners of the Hôtel maintained a decorative continuity typical of the Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI styles, His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Abdullah Al Thani added to this sumptuous setting by including a fascinating collection of jewels and extraordinary gold boxes spanning nearly three centuries, as well as a variety of objets d’art including splendorous Fabergé, mother of pearl fans and hardstone desk seals.


This collection of miniature treasures, acquired one by one by this discerning collector, comprises jewels dating from the Renaissance through to the 16th century, as well as jewelry from the 19th century up to the first part of the 20th century. Highlights include a series of brooches "à l'égaré" forming knots typical of the Madame de Sévigné period, and a devant de corsage with floral designs enhanced with precious stones and important natural pearls in pendant.
Jewels with historical origins include a fleur-de-lys brooch set with diamonds, enhanced with an important sapphire, said to have belonged to Marie-Louise de Bourbon-Parme.


The extremely rare mid-18th century gold and lacquer necessaire-à-secret with a number of hidden compartments demonstrates the limitless inventiveness and skillfulness of the gold box makers in Paris. An early 18th century chased gold snuff boxes accompany diamond-set Royal and Imperial presentation boxes from the following century. A brightly-enamelled pearl-set singing bird box made in Geneva in the early 19th century enchants the connoisseur and the passionate amateur alike. Two gold bonbonnières by the Dresden court jeweller Johann Christian Neuber, inlaid with semi-translucent hardstone specimens, are true portable ‘bijoux’, further contributing to the lavishness of the collection of jewels and objects of Vertu at the Hôtel Lambert.

Volume VI: Online Auction


This selection comprises 18th- and 19th-century drawings, prints and paintings, alongside fine and exquisite furniture, works of art such as candlesticks, andirons and Limoges enamels. Also featured is silverware, including English and French plates, trays and a fine set of beakers. European and Chinese porcelain vases are also presented to reflect the exquisite taste of this Parisian hôtel particulier.
